Firing
I
love firing kilns as much as I love creating pieces to fire.It
is just a different kind of magic - Heat magic. The combination
of time, temperature and soda transforms dusty clay into glassy
permanence. Amazing! Watching the kiln glow with heat on a
dark night has a satisfaction that most potters share. My
soda kiln is basically the same as most gas kilns. It has extra
port holes around the kiln that allow soda to be added to
the atmosphere to achieve the effect I am going for at the
time. The kiln interior was sprayed with a soda resistant
coating to protect it from build up of glaze. The walls are
double thick soft brick. This thickness gives a nice slow
cool and gives me a couple of days to clean up the studio
and look forward to the opening of a new load. Last firing
